Business data security and compliance for small teams

Keeping client and business data safe, and being able to show it, matters more every year. We help small UK businesses set up proportionate security and data protection, then keep it current as they grow.

Who this is for

For owners who hold other people's information: client files, staff records, customer lists. Maybe a larger customer has just sent a security questionnaire, or you know your passwords live in a spreadsheet. You are not a bank and have no IT team, but you still need to get this right.

The security gaps small businesses actually have

  • No idea what we hold

Client emails, spreadsheets, old exports and shared drives pile up. You cannot protect or delete what you cannot list, and a single request for data exposes the gap fast.

  • Security by good intentions

Shared passwords, a former employee still logged in, a laptop with no lock. Nobody decided it, it just grew, and it looks fine right up until something goes wrong.

  • Questionnaires you dread

A bigger customer sends forty security questions and a deadline. You are unsure what you can honestly tick, and you do not want to overclaim just to win the work.

  • No budget for a security team

A breach could still end the business, yet an enterprise programme is out of reach. What you need is a short set of steps sized to a team of your size.

Proportionate security, set up once and kept up

Scope &
Strategy

We map what data you hold, where it lives and who can see it, then rank the gaps by real risk. You get a short, ordered list of what to fix first and what can safely wait.

Systems &
Solutions

We put the fixes in place: proper access, a password manager, backups that have been tested, each client's data kept apart from the next, and tidy records you can show a customer.

Questions people ask

What security does a small business need in the UK?

The basics cover most of the risk: strong unique passwords with two step sign in, regular updates, tested backups, limited access, malware protection and a plan for when something goes wrong. The Cyber Essentials scheme sets out five controls that cover much of this. Check the NCSC website for details.

Does my small business have to comply with UK GDPR?

In most cases yes, because the rules apply to almost any organisation that handles personal data, and many must also pay a data protection fee to the ICO. Your situation may differ, so check the ICO guidance or take advice rather than relying on a web page.

Do I need Cyber Essentials?

Not always. Some customers and public sector contracts ask for it, others do not. You can follow the five controls without taking the formal assessment, and we help you do that. If a buyer specifically requires the formal route, we will tell you plainly.

How do I get help with business data security?

Start with a conversation. Tell us what data you hold and what has prompted the question, whether that is a customer, a worry or a near miss. We will say what looks urgent, what can wait and how we could help.

Talk to us about security and compliance.

You tell us what is going on. We tell you honestly whether we can help, and if we cannot, we will say so.
